The Starlite, one of New York’s pre-Stonewall gay bars – a black-owned and operated influential dance club, is celebrated in, ‘ We Came To Sweat‘. Mo’Nique returns to the big screen in her first film since winning an Oscar for ‘ Precious‘ in ‘ Blackbird‘ a story based on Larry Duplechan’s Novel of the same title, with the films screeplay written by Brit Rikki Beadle-Blair. Including Kenyan film, ‘ Stories of Our Lives‘ which gets its UK Premiere at the festival but sadly is already sold out. I mean, how much was hidden about Harry Truman?ĭavid McCullough: Well, nothing large, nothing sensational emerged in the course of the 10 years I worked on the book. ![]() Kevin Gavin: It's been 40 years since the end of the Truman administration. They discussed his just-published book, "Truman," which would garner him his first Pulitzer Prize. Their first conversation was in 1992 on Gavin’s program Between the Lines on WDUQ. The Confluence host Kevin Gavin interviewed David McCullough several times through the years. ![]() His books included biographies of John Adams and Harry Truman, as well as the building of the Panama Canal and the Brooklyn Bridge and the Johnstown Flood. He was also honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. David McCullough, a Pittsburgh native whose work as an author and historian, garnered him two Pulitzer Prizes and two National Book Awards, died Aug. ![]() ![]() This all seemed very romantic to me, learning about the bad boys of the restaurant world. He was provocative on purpose, poking the reader with a stick with each taboo topic. Particularly memorable are the stories about chefs having sex with customers in the walk-ins the revelation that he had a dangerous cocaine habit when he worked at Les Halles that carried over to the kitchen and his strict instructions on what to eat and what to avoid in a restaurant, which I parroted to everyone I dined out with for the next three to five years (“Tony says skip the shrimp, only order the fish on Tuesday and Thursday”). He should have known better.Īt first, I was shocked but secretly delighted by what he revealed in the pages of Kitchen Confidential, which was published on an astonishing 20 years ago. That’s why reading Kitchen Confidential is such a let down today. I think that was true for anyone who devotedly followed his career. ![]() The more I learned about him, the more enamored with him I became. ![]() I had just been hired at a magazine focused on restaurants and chefs - my first foray into food writing - and, as it turned out, it would become not just necessary but absolutely pertinent to know everything about Bourdain. ![]() ![]() Pinker thinks that if everyone knew, and more importantly understood, the things he is telling us, then everyone would be better off, the world would be safer and we could all worry a lot less. ![]() But there is also an evangelistic element in the mix. He sweeps you along with his enthusiasm and energy. And classes always (or almost always!) go better if the instructor is having a good time, and Pinker is plainly enjoying himself here. There is an engaging person behind the text. ![]() ![]() It is extremely well written, its main charm being that you really feel you are getting to know the author as you go along. This book, which is effectively a written version of a class Pinker has been giving at Harvard for several years now, has many strengths. ![]() ![]() ![]() Instead, Candide goes to war, suffers through natural disasters, gets on a ship bound for Latin America, gets in a shipwreck, goes to the mythical city of El Dorado, and kills a disproportionate number of religious figures. Instead, it's an adventure story that follows the (totally insane) antics of Candide, a wide-eyed, innocent boy who's totally besotted by a super-hot girl.īut this isn't your standard love story. ![]() But this isn't a dull treatise or an angry screed. Nothing is safe from the scathing commentary Voltaire delivers in this novel-not power, wealth, love, philosophy, religion, education, or, most significantly, optimism. You just ended up with someone kind of like Voltaire, the literary force of nature behind Candide. Finally, add the kind of world-building that rockets books to the top of the bestseller list-like our man George R.R. Now, roll in the acerbic observations of your favorite public intellectual-say, Ta-Nehisi Coates.
